Charges against DoE deputy director-general not linked to e-waste, says lawyer

KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Environment (DoE) deputy director-general (Operations) Dr Norhazni Mat Sari’s defence team has clarified that the charges against her are not related to e-waste smuggling.

Lawyer Haresh Mahadevan said a public statement by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki linking her to the issue was baseless.

“She was today charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

“However, she was not charged with anything related to e-waste smuggling, despite earlier public statements by Azam Baki suggesting she was responsible for illegal e-waste being brought into Malaysia.

“In fact, she was never questioned or investigated in relation to any alleged e-waste activities,” he said.

Earlier, Norhazni was charged in the Sessions Court with accepting RM21,000 in graft and pleaded not guilty.

She faces six counts of receiving RM21,000 without consideration through six transactions, transferred into her daughter’s account from a company director linked to her official duties.

She was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment or a fine or both, upon conviction.
